Carl Major
Director of Bands
Following a successful six year tenure as the Director of Bands
at T.R. Miller High School in Brewton, Alabama, Carl Major has
returned to Foley High School as the Director of Bands In the
late 1990’s, Mr. Major led an extraordinary Foley Band to a
Grammy Award, numerous superior ratings and championships,
proclamations from Local and State Representative, and
commendations from the President of the United States. Mr. Major
earned his Bachelors degree from the University of Southern
Mississippi and a Masters degree from the University of Phoenix.
Mr. Major has teaching experience in Tennessee, Florida, and
Alabama.
Carl Major composes drill, music, and percussion arrangements
for many bands in the South Eastern United States. Mr. Major has
also served as a private studio teacher at Chipola Jr. College in
Marianna, Florida. As a highly sought out clinician and instructor,
Mr. Major travels during the summer months teaching numerous
band and percussion camps. Mr. Major has taught over 100
summer band and percussion camps, as well as judged band and
percussion contests, in Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama,
Oklahoma, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Georgia. He has
performed in Taiwan, Hawaii, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
parade, the Fiesta Bowl Parade, the Tournament of Roses
parade, and Carnage Hall in New York City.
Mr. Major is the past Percussion Coordinator for the Gulf Coast
Winter Guard Circuit. Serving as the Percussion Editor for both
the Jalen and Matrix Music Publishing Companies of Orlando,
Florida, Mr. Major has over 120 original and arranged
compositions published with Jalen Publishing, Pepper Music, the
Southern Music Company, and Matrix Publishing. As of 2006, over
400-band programs worldwide have performed music or drill
written by Mr. Carl Major confirmed by the accolades of the Jalen
and Matrix Publishing Companies.
Mr. Major holds professional memberships with the National Band
Association, Percussion Arts Society, Alabama Bandmasters
Association, Florida Bandmasters Association, Music Educators
National Conference, the International Association of Rudimental
Percussionist, and he is also a member of the National Who’s Who
among American High School Teachers and Music Educators. In
2004, Mr. Major became a member of the American School Band
Directors Association. A very elite membership, this organization
has only 8 active members in the state of Alabama. In 2000, Mr.
Major’s Band Program was listed as a “Grammy Signature School”
as having one of the top 100 band programs in the United States.
This achievement was selected out of 18,000 public high schools
by the N.A.R.A.S. and his band program was given a “Grammy
Award”. For this outstanding accomplishment, Mr. Major was
awarded the “Citation of Excellence” through the National Band
Association for excellence in Music Education.
While at T.R. Miller High School, Mr. Major led the band program
earning superior ratings at concert and marching competitions.
The T.R. Miller Band was listed in Drum Corp International
“Commitment to Excellence” program in 2004. Presently, this
program recognizes only 937 bands in the United States. In the
state of Alabama, the T.R. Miller Band is one of only 37 bands
listed for this prestigious award. For two years in a row under the
direction of Carl Major, the percussion section at T.R. Miller
recorded music for the Jalen Publishing Company. The name, “T.
R. Miller Percussion Section” was boasted on the cover of the
promotional music CD that was sent to over 18,000 public high
school and middle school band programs across the country.
In 2005, Carl Major, received an endorsement from the Innovative
Percussion Company. With this endorsement, Mr. Major will
perform exclusively with products from the Innovative Percussion
Company with his drill writing and music writing company, Major
Productions. As director of the T.R. Miller band program, Mr.
Major is listed as an endorsement educator on the Innovative
Percussion Company website and research brochures sent to
thousands of schools systems across the United States. In July of
2006, one of Mr. Major’s compositions was performed at the
Interlochen School of Music in Michigan.
Carl Major has been married to Amanda Major of Fairhope,
Alabama for 15 years. Mrs. Amanda Major assisted with the music
programs in the Brewton City schools. She was a founding
member of the Mobile College Brass Ensemble, and performed
with the Alabama All State Red Band. Mrs. Major spent two
summers traveling with the Ventures Drum and Bugle Corp from
Ontario, Canada where her ensemble won a DCI Individual and
Ensemble World competition. Mrs. Major attended the University
of Southern Mississippi where she earned Bachelor degrees in
Philosophy, English, and Instrumental Music. Mrs. Major was an
honors graduate from the University of South Alabama earning a
Masters Degree in English Education and membership in the
International Honor Society Kappa Delta Pi. Mrs. Major has been a
private instrumental instructor in Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee,
and Alabama, teaching musicians from beginners to college level.
Mr. and Mrs. Major have three children, 9-year-old Madison Leigh,
8-year-old Carson, and 6-year-old Grayson.
Jimmy O'Cain
Associate Band Director
Jimmy O'Cain is in his Third year of teaching at Foley
High School. He came to Foley after teaching three
years at St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis,
Mississippi. While at St. Stanislaus, the band received
numerous awards under Mr. O’Cain’s leadership. During
Mr. O’Cain’s tenure at St. Stanislaus, he established a
winterguard and winter drumline.
Jimmy O'Cain received his Bachelor's Degree in Music
Education from the University of Southern Mississippi in
Hattiesburg. During his college career he was a member
of The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band, USM
Concert Bands where he was the principal percussionist,
and member of the USM Percussion Ensembles. Jimmy
was a member of the USM Steel Band I where he
performed as a double second soloist. He also
instructed the University's Steel Band II as a student at
the University.
Jimmy O’Cain is a member of the Music Educators
National Conference, Alabama Bandmasters, the
Percussive Arts Society, and is an Educator Endorser for
Pro-Mark Drumsticks. Mr. O'Cain is listed as an
Educator Endorser on the Pro-Mark drumsticks website.
With this endorsment he will perform exclusively with
products from the Pro-Mark Company. Mr. O’Cain is an
avid Percussion Instructor and Arranger for bands in
Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. Mr. O’Cain has
also been an Adjudicator for Band programs across the
Southern United States.
Jimmy has been married for 12 years to Mrs. Aimee O’
Cain who is also a musician. Aimee O'Cain has played
the flute for 19 years. She is currently employed by South
Baldwin Regional Medical Center, where she works in
Nursing Administration. They have 3 children; Hadyn- 12,
Hope- 8, and Iain- 3 years old.
